Of Mice And Men

Of Mice And Men is a novel written by John Steinbeck. George and Lennie are the two main characters in the book. They just got kicked out of a farm they were working at because of Lennie. They find new work on a farm in California. They work hard to pursue their dream, the dream of one day owning their own piece of land. They realize that their dream isn't very easy to achieve as they face lots of conflicts and challenges. Will they ever reach into the stars?

Symbolism

Lennie's love for puppies clearly shows him craving something that isn't there. He wants to have something that he can trust and always be with. Since he doesnt have a proper home nor a family that is what he missing. Sadly he doesnt know this because he has a disability which causes him to act like a child.

George and Lennie's farm symbolized a dream far from reality. They work hard for their dollars hoping to reach out to the stars. Which no human can obviously accomplish. Reaching out to the stars is like Lennie's and George's dream, something for far from reality. But its the hope that keeps them going through the day.

Candy's dog is a very old dog which candy loves and treats like his own flesh and blood. I think that the dog symbolizes something you cant taste, touch smell or hear. Its love. I think that it proves that is doesn't matter how old someone gets or how they look, all that matters is the way you feel when you are around them.

Crooks symbolizes the opinion John Steinbeck has of discrimination. Crooks isn't welcome in the other guy's community of friendship because of his black skin color. Steinbeck was strongly against discrimination and he uses Crooks as his voice.

Curley's wife symbolizes that everybody need somebody. Curley's wife is unhappily married and tries to talk to the farmers. She gets awfully lonely even though she's wealthy. There is a quote in the book on pg. 86 where Curley's wife talks to Lennie in the barn right before her death. "Why cant I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely." - Curley's wife

Animal Imagery:
Page Quotation Effect
pg. 2 "...dragging his feet a little, a way a bear drags his paws." Big and strong
pg. 3 "...snorted into the water like a horse." Loud, misbehaved and big
pg. 3 "...Lennie dabbled his big paw..." Big,strong and strong hands
pg. 11 "...and you hold on like it was a mouse." Hold tight / hold tightly
pg. 13 "...shoot you for a coyote..." Tall, strongly built, insensible acts
pg. 9 "..slowly like a terrier.." Lennie doesn't want to give up
pg. 4 "..but i remember about the rabbits." Clingy, attached to things

Chapter 3 and 4

Why doesn't Candy want to kill his dog?
Candy doesn't want to kill his dog because he is attached to him since they were together for many years and he loves him.

Are Candy's feelings understandable? Have you ever felt very attached to an old or sick animal that had to be put to sleep?
Candy's feelings are understandable because my dog was about to die and I, like Candy, felt very upset and hurt.

Why does Candy say later on that he should have shot his fog himself and not let a stranger do it?
He said that because he felt that it should have been his job, his responsibility to say good-bye to your best friend.

Why did Curley pick on Lennie?
Curley picks on Lennie because Lennie is tall and strong compared to curly who is small. Curley envies him and therefore tries to hurt him.

Describe Curley's main problem in your opinion.
I think he is jealous because he wants to be tall and strong like Lennie.

Why didn't Lennie fight back at first when Curly hit him?
Because George told him to stay out of trouble and away from Curly.

What happened to Curley as a result pf picking on Lennie?
Lennie got extremely angry and broke his hand.

How does crooks react to Lennie's appearance at the door of his room?
He is shocked because on white people visit him and no one ever talk to him or wants to have
his company.

Crooks invites Lennie to stat and talk with him because at first he sees it as a chance to get angry and mad and let out all his anger of not being wanted but deep inside he just wants some one to talk to no matter who it is.

Chapter 5 and 6

What things does Lennie do or say that show he is mentally retarded? List three things.
1. Kills puppy and Curley's wife.
2. Forget's about everything but the rabbits
3. How he forgets about his aunt Clara who gave him mice when he was a little boy.

Is george's treatment of Lennie fiar?
George's treatment may not be fair all the time but lets face it Lennie could drive any body mad. But in the whole George treats Lennie right because he takes care of him and loves him and protects him.

Is Geore's treatment of Lennie understandable?
It is understandable beacuase people with disabilities should be respected and treated like normal people mabye even with more care.

How do these characters trear Lenneie and wht? Give one incident for each trhar shoes his/her treatment of Lennie.
a. Candt treats him like any other person he meets. he's kind and friendly to Lennie. As shown in their room when George, Candy and Lennie talk about the farm.

b. Curley's wife treats him friendly and his is slightly flirtacious beacuse she wants to have someone to talk to. For examplr in the barm before he kills her.

c. Crooks treats him with no respect at first but later he is rather friendly because he needs someone to talk to.

What fo they all have in common?
They all and nice people who just want someone to share something with.

Why does Lennie kill the pupply anf later the girl?
He killed the puppt beacuase the puppy bit him and he killed the girl beacuse she was screaming.

Do you think Lennie had to be shot? what where some other alternatives? what were some other alternatives? What would have happend to Lennie if George hadnt shot him?
I think that it was nessisecry to shoot Lennie. He could have run into the caves and lived there. If they would have shot him he would have proberbly been locked up.

How is killing Lennie similar to the killing of Candy's dog? Why do you think George killed Lennie himself instead of letting the men do it?
It's similar because Candy loved his dog just like George loved Lennie. He killed him because he saw how much Candy suffered not killing his dog himself.
